Please make sure that you check current rules regarding the appropriate number of households that are allowed to dine together before making your booking.

If you already have a booking at Roots that no longer conforms to government guidelines, please email enquiries@rootsyork.co.uk and we will help you cancel or re-arrange your booking.

In the event of cancellation within 48 hours of the arrival time, we will keep the full deposit as a cancellation charge. If we can re-let the booking, we will refund the deposit (minus a £5 administration charge). We will only accept cancellations by email. In the event of a cancellation outside of 48 hours before the arrival time, we will refund the deposit (minus a £5 administration charge).

We require a £25 deposit per person at the time of booking.

When making a booking, please inform us if you are vegetarian or have any dietary requirements as we need to know in advance so that we can prepare an appropriate menu. With notice, we can adapt to most dietary requirements but as our food includes dairy products throughout, we are not able to cater for guests with severe lactose allergies or those who require a dairy-free diet. However, for those who cannot eat cow products, we are able to prepare a menu containing ingredients from sheep or goats instead. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Allergies

Whilst we follow best practice at all times, we do like to highlight the fact that all the dishes we serve are produced in an environment where allergens are also prepared and cooked.

We cannot guarantee that the environment will be completely allergen-free.

Reservations will have the table for two and a half hours. We may require the table back after this time.

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate infants or babies within the restaurant. Due to the fixed menu format and price, we find that we are more suitable for children over 10 years old. We do not have a children’s menu so all guests will be served the same menu and at the same price.

 

We have no set date for a “full menu change” as we do not change the whole menu at once. The menu tends to evolve across the seasons as various produce becomes available to us from our garden and farm.

Lunch

12pm – 2.30pm Thursday – Sunday

Dinner

6pm – 7.30pm on Thursday & Friday

5pm – 7.30pm on Saturday & Sunday

We are closed Monday – Wednesday.

We do not have on-site parking, however, Marygate car park is located directly behind Roots. This offers 24-hour parking with daytime rates of £2.30 per hour and a flat £2 charge for evenings from 6pm to midnight.  Additional parking can be found at Bootham Row (5 mins) or Union Terrace (10 mins).

We do accept walk-ins as long as we have availability for that service. However, our booking system is live and if you find we have availability on-line, even at the last minute, please do book straight away as the booking might be taken up by another guest before you arrive.

Unfortunately, we do not have any accommodation at Roots.

If you need transport it is advisable to pre-book in advance.

The restaurant at Roots is located on the ground floor along with an accessible toilet. External access is via a small ramp. The bar area and private dining room are on the first floor with internal access via a staircase only.

Unfortunately we are not able to welcome dogs or pets in the bar or restaurant.
